Let National Volunteer Week Inspire You to Volunteer

National Volunteer Week begins on April 19, and whatever your talents, you can LIVE UNITED by volunteering with United Way. Laurie Glatthaar has been a United Way site visit volunteer for a year and a half, evaluating programs that are applying for United Way funding. “I have been contributing to United Way for many years, but this is my first time volunteering,” said Glatthaar. “I’ve learned so much about the different needs that exist in each community and also about the great programs that our United Way support helps create.” Fidel Marquez, vice president of external affairs at ComEd, also LIVES UNITED through volunteerism. He is a Senior Advisory Committee member for the United Way Latino Initiative and a board member on various United Way funded organizations. “Providing counsel and direction to the four agencies that make up the Latino Initiative gives us a great level of involvement in improving the lives of Latino youth,” said Marquez. “I believe that we define ourselves by how we serve others, and by serving others we raise our own spirit.” United Way offers many opportunities to LIVE UNITED: United Way Individual Volunteers are a diverse group of people who lend their skills during one-time or extended roles at our partner agencies across the region. United Way Outreach Committees help us identify and meet the unique needs of the African American, Latino and Asian Pacific American communities. Through the United Way African American Initiative and the Latino Initiative outreach volunteers are helping local young people in in various communities thrive and become productive adults. A United Way Day of Caring is an opportunity for you and the caring people you work with to help out at an agency that could use some extra hands. The United Way Young Leaders Society provides young professionals the opportunity to have a positive impact on their community. Participants have the opportunity to volunteer, network and develop leadership skills in a variety of informal settings.
